The LeaPs Instructional Design Model
Project Overview
Background:
This semester in my ID Class, my instructor introduced us to the LeaPs ID Model. My initial thoughts were that it was busy and would be overwhelming to use! I didn’t worry too much because my past experience in the OPWL program has taught me to trust the process.
Over the course of 15 weeks, I applied the model to two different workplace problems. On one project, I worked individually and on the other, I worked as part of an ID team. Twelve weeks into the semester, I began to feel a lot more confident about this model’s application. As a result, I decided to create this lunch and learn presentation that IDs can learn from in their workplace. IDs who work with a team can make a presentation to their team.
Tools: Canva, Word, Google Slides
Development Time: 6hrs
Goal: Learners will apply the LeaPs ID Model to resolve workplace problems.
Advance prep time for IDs interested in presenting this slide deck: 3hrs. This includes the time it will take to study the slides, instructor guide, and the videos in the references.
*Note that the textbook in the reference materials is only available to students in the OPWL program at Boise State University.
Problem: Newbie and experienced IDs are unfamiliar with the Leaps ID Model.
Empathy and Analysis:
I found it easy to empathize with the target audience because I was able to recall how inundated I was by the model. I gathered relevant information for the slides from the course text and recommended videos and synthesized it into introductory information that learners could engage with for an hour. After creating a storyboard, I proceeded to the design and development phase.
Design and Development:
I quickly created a prototype in Canva before replicating it in Google slides. Instead of speaker notes, I created an Instructor Guide. I made this decision because most IDs who will be presenting this slide deck are not familiar with the model. As a result, they might want to study the reference materials and create their own speaker notes.
Implementation and Evaluation:
I haven’t had the chance to implement this training myself. I do plan to try it out with the next ID team I work with and receive feedback that I can incorporate in subsequent iterations.
If anyone is interested in implementing this training, please contact me.
I will be happy to help and receive any feedback.
